Smart Motorways are all over the news these days – for all the wrong reasons. The accident rate is currently unacceptable.Some pundits have compared Smart Motorways with the introduction of VAR in Premiership football – a great idea but badly implemented.Although the general consensus in the media is that Smart Motorways have been a complete failure, we fully understand that Highways England is trying hard to solve the motorway congestion problem here. We are not for one moment saying that this should be at the expense of safety, after all, that is our main consideration over all else. We do believe that with better operating practice, better safety and less congestion are not mutually exclusive.
